There’s something beautiful about a grey, gloomy Sunday morning, the kind that begs for warm mugs, flaky pastries, and the comfort of good company. And that’s exactly how our very first Sunday Scone Club unfolded at Pallet Coffee: a table full of homemade scones, new faces, and that slow, gentle energy only Sunday can bring.
For our inaugural Social House event, the assignment was simple: bring a homemade scone. What arrived was nothing short of a pastry parade.
Amanda kicked things off with her perfectly flaky English scones, the kind that flakes when you bite into it. Bill followed with stunning White Chocolate Raspberry Scones, fragrant and studded with ruby-red berries. The table slowly filled with warm, buttery creations until it looked like a cozy home café.
But no scone party is complete without its loyal sidekicks: clotted cream and jam. Le Meadow’s Pantry generously elevated our spread with two artisanal jams — Grapefruit Smoked Salt Marmalade and Fig, Apple, Earl Grey Jam. Their citrusy, floral, deep flavours were the perfect pairing for both sweet and savoury scones.
Clotted cream has always held a special place in my heart. I still remember the first time I tried it - working for a French pastry chef at the Manitoba Club (thank you, Eric!), tasting a fresh-from-the-oven scone topped with that impossibly silky cream. Life-changing. For Sunday Scone Club, I made a quicker stovetop recipe because, let’s be real, who has 12 hours to hover near an oven?
The inspiration, though, came from Shelley, one of our regulars who never does anything halfway. She arrived with Sour Cream White Cheddar Scones, a cherished family recipe, paired with cultured butter she made herself and a stunning homemade quince jam. The quinces came from her neighbours’ garden, a true garden-to-table moment that tasted as wholesome as it sounds.
Then there was Franco, who not only made Hong Kong Milk Tea Scones with Condensed Milk (yes, they were incredible), but did so after a trip to the ER the day before. He literally baked with one functioning hand — and still delivered.
As the room filled with chatter and the smell of espresso, Ben from Pallet floated around with beautiful coffees and teas, complete with latte art that made everyone pause to take photos. To help break the ice, we played a playful twist on the classic coffee stamp card: everyone exchanged “stamps” with people they met, answering fun questions printed on the back. It didn’t take long for strangers to become friends.
Before heading home, guests received the perfect parting gift for scone lovers: artisanal loose-leaf teas generously sponsored by Secret Garden Tea Company, including Cream Earl Grey and Buckingham Palace. It makes for a delicious, warm sip the next morning for any leftover scones.
And just when you thought the cuteness peaked, Cynthia surprised everyone with handcrafted scone-shaped keychains, made from polymer clay and baked to golden perfection. A tiny, adorable memento to carry a piece of Sunday Scone Club wherever you go.
Our first Social House gathering was everything we hoped for: cozy, intimate, delicious, and full of connection. A reminder that sometimes, the simplest ingredients — flour, butter, cream, and a willingness to show up — can create something truly special.
